Sea Glass by the Sea Shore

My new favorite hobby... finding sea glass at the beach!!!

Here's a little history on my new hobby.  I found this at  History of Sea Glass!
"Technically speaking, sea and beach glass are different. Sea glass refers to salt water glass and beach glass refers to fresh water glass. The difference is that glass slowly dissolves in salt water, which gives sea glass a satin-like patina, while it does not dissolve in fresh water. This is because the Ph of salt water is different from that of fresh water.

In the old days, and I mean the old days, because sea and beach glass has been around as long as we have had glass, it was said to be "Mermaid Tears". It was said that everytime a sailor drowned at sea, the Mermaids would cry and the sea glass was their tears washing up on the shore.

And that is the where it comes from....just kidding.

Sea and beach glass is found everywhere in the world, because people have discarded glass in the oceans and waterbodies everywhere. It was natural for waterfront communities worldwide to discard their trash in the water because the water carried it away. Landfills were a terrible health hazard in those days, filled with vermin that carried dangerous diseases like the Plague. The world was a much larger place in those days and the population was much smaller. It just made good sense at the time. This practice is still followed in many third world countries.

Everywhere Sea Glass is found, and it is found everywhere, its value is partially determined by its color. This is because only a few items were stored in red, blue, lavender, purple or pink glass containers. Likewise certain rare tints and shades of these popular colors are found.

For instance, very rare Cobalt Blue, the "sapphire" of the beach, came from such apothacary items as Milk of Magnesia, Vick's Vapo Rub, Noxema, Nivea, and Bromo Seltzer bottles, along with some prescription bottles and perfumes

The extremely rare red pieces, or "rubies" of the beach, might come from perfume bottles, the tail lights on old automobiles, lantern and traffic light lenses, or even some types of old beer bottles, like the bottles made by Anchor Hocking for Schlitz Beer in the 1950's.

Pinks, lavenders, purples, lime greens and other rare shades came from things like perfume bottles and art glass. Many lavenders and pinks come from what was originally clear glass that was clarified with magnesium (lavender) or selenium (pink). The glass has to be clarified with these minerals because the sand from which glass is made is actually amber in color. Over time the sun causes the magnesium and selenium to oxidize, creating the lavender and pink colors.

Greens, browns, and aquas come from beer and soda bottles, and nearly every other source, like Clorox Bleach jugs, shampoos, etc."

I've been trying to find beaches that have a park too!  That way Aiden gets to play and have fun too!

So far my favorite beaches are Torii Beach which is on an Army Base close by and Togochi Beach.  I've posted pictures of Torii on a previous post where you can see some beautiful pictures.

Recently I found Togochi Beach!  This place is awesome (in the slinky voice from the Geico commercial)!!!  When you get to the parking lot all you see is the park.  Aiden and I love this park... they have 2 cement slides and a huge roller slide and lots of sand.

If you walk up the hill you can see the beach.  There is a very low tide so a lot of little places to walk.  I'll let the pictures explain the rest!

I'm training him to find the best glass!... it's working!

So far I've found tons of white, green, aqua, brown glass.  Rare pieces I've found PINK, light yellow, cobalt blue, bright orange, and a teal and brown marble along with some really cool shells.

I'm going to be crafting like crazy!!!

Biggest Success

I have tried over and over again to get Aiden to use the BiG BoY potty!  It first started I guess about 8 months ago.  You know when everyone tells you if they hide it's time to lose the diapers.  HaHa not for us!  I tried everything...videos, candy rewards, putting the potty in the living room...you name it I tried it.

Aiden's little buddy here just got potty trained so I thought, Oh Hell, let's give it another try.

I told Aiden that tomorrow we were going to go potty on the BiG BoY potty.

Day 1:  We woke up and I tried to get him to sit on the potty first thing... nothing.  So I removed his diaper and set a timer for every 30 minutes.  Aiden, when the timer goes off we have to sit on the potty!  This worked!!  He sat but didn't go.  I tried to give him a candy reward, he took it but didn't eat it.  We continued this all day... I filled him with water and salty foods all day.  He never did eat the candy.  Diaper at nap time and bed.

Day 2:  We started the day the same way... no bottoms.  We were much more successful with using the potty and not just sitting on it. I made up a song that we sang and danced to every time he was successful using the potty!  He loved this!!  It made me happy too...no candy!

Day 3: We had a few accidents, but that's ok.  It happens.

Week 2:  Aiden has been doing excellent!!!  He usually takes himself to the potty and doesn't want his song or any help!  He's been having dry diapers every night too!!  In a few more weeks I think we'll try undies at bedtime!

We couldn't be more proud of Aiden!!!

Saving about $60 a month not buying diapers and wipes anymore!!  WooHoo!!!

Spontaneity

Yesterday.  Daniel came up with this brilliant idea to go to the Aquarium!  Normally I would have planned all week for a trip like this; checking out what all there is to do around the area, check the best times to go, and all that good stuff.

We ate lunch and Daniel asked how long it take to get there.  So, I went on my new favorite website...Okinawa Hai for all the details.  It said it takes about an hour and a half if you take the ExpressWay (toll road).  And we're off in 15 minutes.  Aiden napped in the car which was perfect!  I had pack a few snacks and we were golden!

We finally make it there after a 2 hour drive due to unexpected Sunday traffic.  There are SEVEN parking areas... Did I mention that there were 7 parking areas?  This place is huge!  There are 12 different areas in the Ocean Expo Park.  We only made it to 2.  I guess we'll be going back again!!  Here's the link if you want to learn more about the place.  Ocean Expo Park you can choose to view the page in English and the Aquarium.

We had so much fun!!  Aiden was free!  When you first walk in they have a touch pool, which was too crowded, so we walk to a very large tank with none other than "Dori".  To our amazement and delight all of the signs and informational plaques telling you what is in each tank were in English!!!  I really need to learn some more Japanese.

Daniel, Aiden and I made our way through the crowds.  Everything I have told you has been all about how wonderful everything is and don't get me wrong it's a dream but...  One complaint...I have found that the Japanese are not very considerate.  Let me explain.  First I think there were more adults than children at the aquarium, and all of them with a camera.  (I don't mean your point and shoot, I mean the biggest and most expensive Nikon/ Canon)  They crowded around the exhibits and took about 20 pictures at each one.  Poor Aiden tried to squeeze in where he found a spot, but got pushed.  Ok complaining over.  We made it to the large tank.  I shouldn't say large, I should say GINORMOUS!!!  It had so many Manta Rays and 2 HUGE Whale Sharks!!!  This exhibit had stadium seating and had a second area where the sea life swam over our heads!

The indoor park is over and now to the Turtles, Dolphins, and Manatee (Daniel's Favorite!)

Sidenote:
This blows my mind!  The Japanese have all these advances in technology and live to be over 100, and are so healthy.  They don't put there kids in carseats or seatbelts for that matter.  If you see a carseat in someones car it's usually in the front seat.  Can you believe this?!  I just don't understand.  here's a picture to prove my mind blowing point... this child is probably no older than Aiden!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the pictures!
